Our Story

cream girl.jpg

Hi, I'm Karen & I am the face behind Charisma dachshunds located in Chester, Arkansas. I have owned dachshunds since 1983 and began my breeding journey in March of 2017 with my first girl Kiesha followed by my stud Samson.  The two have been the foundation of my program.  We live on top of a small mountain where we are 4th generation family with a few ponds, cattle, and lots of wildlife and unbelievable views where we enjoy growing our own gardens and fruit trees.  we love taking the doxies out for evening rides to the creek or around the farm in the buggy looking at the deer & hiking various trails around our area.  Interacting with my puppies through the various stages of their growth is where my heart lies. They are a part of my family until they become a part of yours.

What is "ENS"
Early Neurological Stimulation?
The difference that Early Neurological Stimulation makes!

Additionally "ESI"
Early Scent Introduction

Early neurological stimulation (ENS), also known as the Bio Sensor Program, is a series of brief, gentle exercises performed on puppies between days 3 and 16 of life. These exercises, which include tactile stimulation, head positioning, and supine (belly-up) positioning, are designed to stimulate the neurological system and improve stress responses and physical health in later life.

The exercises involved in ENS are:

  1. Head pointed down: Holding the puppy with its head pointed downward for 3-5 seconds.

  2. Supine position: Holding the puppy on its back for 3-5 seconds.

  3. Thermal stimulation: Placing the puppy on a cool towel for 3-5 seconds.

  4. Tactile stimulation: Gently stimulating between the toes with a Q-tip for 3-5 seconds.

  5. Head held erect: Holding the puppy upright, with its head above its tail, for 3-5 seconds.

These exercises are performed once a day for each puppy, for a short duration (3-5 seconds per exercise). The goal is to introduce mild stress to the puppies during a period of rapid neurological development, which is believed to have several positive effects.

Some benefits of ENS include:
*Improved cardiovascular performance: Stronger heartbeats and improved heart rate.
*Stronger adrenal glands: Improved tolerance to stress and greater resistance to disease.
*Better brain development: Improved circulation and immune system.
*Healthy neural connections: Puppies become accustomed to human touch through gentle touches and massages on various parts of their bodies.

We also incorporate early scent introduction (ESI)
Introducing puppies to scents early in life can have many benefits:

  • Improved scenting ability: Puppies who are exposed to scents early on can have better scenting abilities later in life. This can help dogs with search and rescue, diabetic and seizure alerting, and more. Enhanced cognitive abilities; Regular exposure to new scents can help stimulate a puppy's brain, which may improve their problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to unfamiliar environments.

  • Improved temperament and confidence; Puppies that are exposed to variety of smells from a young age may be more confident and less fearful in unfamiliar situations. This can help reduce stress-related behaviors and make them more resilient to change.

  • Better performance: Puppies who are introduced to scents early on may perform better in obedience, tracking, field trails, and rescue.
